Second Fatal Crocodile Attack Hits Bunjaazi Island

(Kalangala) – Residents of Bunjaazi island, Kyondo landing site in Kalangala District, were left in shock after a crocodile attack on the shores of Lake Victoria claimed the life of Nakalyango Specioza, a mother and wife of Pastor Fred.

The incident occurred on the evening of November 11, 2024, at around 5:00 p.m. when Nakalyango went to fetch water. According to Simplex Ampulire, the LC1 chairperson, the crocodile struck suddenly, grabbing Nakalyango and disappearing into the lake. Despite an ongoing search by residents, no remains had been recovered at the time of reporting.

Nakalyango, who is survived by a four-month-old baby boy, is the latest victim in a series of crocodile attacks on Bunjaazi island. Last year, a 12-year-old boy was killed in a similar attack, with only parts of his body recovered. Another survivor lost a leg in an attack, and the reptiles have also preyed on livestock, including pigs, cows, goats, and poultry.

Kyamuswa sub-county vice-chairperson Veronica Nakasiita has called on the government and wildlife authorities to take immediate action. “We need shallow wells or boreholes to prevent people, especially children, from fetching water at the lake,” Nakasiita said. She also urged Uganda Wildlife Authority to address the presence of crocodiles frequently spotted by fishermen and residents.
